The steel I-beam arrives

September 3, 2008

A steel I-beam?  Yes, a steel I-beam.  In our house.  Not a necessary item for structural purposes, but something Pete and I have always wanted.  We asked for one, just one, and it will ultimately provide structural support to the second floor and be visible below in the kitchen and living room.

Yeah, that thing was HEAVY.  Jeff (the builder), Jesse, and Tom hauled the I-beam up from the street and onto the first floor subfloor themselves.  No crane.  They placed it exactly where the structural beam under the first floor system is, to make sure it’s properly supported.  It’s also approximately where it needs to be when the time comes to build the first floor walls and the floor system above.

In the first two photos, you can also see some of the new fence in the backyard.  Here’s a close-up of how it looks:

The fence is largely done, except for the last few feet near the house, including the gates.

We’re still scheduled to have the SIP’s arrive next week, but we don’t have an exact date yet.
